Are they kid friendly?

We do not recommend neither a sugar glider nor a hedgehog for young children. Hedgehogs are ideal for ages 10 and up. Where as Sugar Gliders are more fitting for 15 and up.

Can I be allergic to a hedgehog?

While most people do not suffer an allergic reaction to hedgehogs, some still do and in almost all cases, it appears to be an allergy to the saliva. There are, however, other things to watch for. If you have an allergy to a hedgehog's bedding material or to other animals, this can also cause problems since a hedgehog's quills will push the offending substances just below the surface skin on your hands and create a reaction that wouldn't otherwise occur.

Can I take my new pet outside?

Hedgehogs love to go explore outside, they especially love to go hunting for rollypollies. However Sugar Gliders we suggest only leaving the house with them in travel pouches, until you form a true and ever lasting bond with them, you never know if they will run off once given a chance to explore the great outdoors.

What degree should I keep my house?

Sugar Gliders are used to warmer climates, so your house should be kept at, at least 72 degrees. Hedgies need it warmer too, if you allow your hedgehog to get too chilly they will go into hybernation and die.

What is "breeder fees"?

Our gliders are all from distinguished and founding bloodlines, making them a prize for anyone who wishes to breed them. However it's not fair to charge someone who is going to keep their glider as a pet as much as we charge someone who is going to use our kind little ones to start a business of their very own.

What size cage does my new pet require?

It all comes down to how fun and interactive you want your pet to be, it all comes down to what you feel comfortable providing your new little friend and or friends. Hedghogs, for instance need a lot of room to be active in, we suggest something large that can incorporate not only a litter box and a habitat for them to sleep in, but also a wheel (yes they can run up to five miles in one night).

Sugar Gliders need a cage where you can hang a water bottle, a pouch, place a wheel, and where the bars are no more then half an inch apart. We sell excellent cages for our little ones that are perfect for one or two.

Do I need to neuter my pet?

With Hedgehogs you may spay or neuter them, but since they are typically isolated, non socializing animals there's really no need to find a vet who can do so.

With Sugar Gliders it's a different story, spaying them is out of the question, it's too large a cost for a dangerous pointless suregery. Sugar Glider females don't go into heat like cats or dogs, so leaving the female as she is, is the best and safest choice for your little girl. Now neutering a male, is a totally different scenario. It's a simple surgery performed by an a vet who is well versed with exotic animals. The neutering of a male will aid in calming his tempermate, and will prevent him from forming visible markers of a male. Here at The Colorful Gliders, when you purchase one of our the gentlemen, we can arrange neutering for you so when he's ready to come home you don't have to worry about any of the fuss that comes with setting up a neutering.

Can I put more then one Sugar Glider in one cage?

Yes, unlike Hedgehogs, who are non-social animals, Sugar Gliders thrive on loving company. In the wild these sweet little ones live in thriving colonies, and it's in their nature to need that companionship even as pets. Since they are nocturnal, they enjoy playing with cage mates while their new owner is sleeping. Cage mates also provide needed warmth, and they clean one and other. As to how many you can have per cage, it all comes down to how big a cage you provide them.

What special care may my new pet need?

With all animals each individual is different, however with hedgies, the biggest adjustment you will need to find the space for their enviroment. It's key to remember the more fun and interactive you have putting thier habitat together the more fun they will have in it. Sugar Gliders are also similar in the more exciting the enviroment you provide them, the more active and happy they will be.

How much is my monthly upkeep on my new pet?

It depends on how many new members you add to your family. A single Sugar Glider's diet and cage needs is under $30 a month. A Hedgehog reqires $15 a month, again this includes your price of food, treats, and bedding.
